←  Back to Courses

This course provides a comprehensive overview of seminal works of ancient Greek literature, philosophy, and history, exploring the foundational texts and thinkers that have shaped Western intellectual traditions. Starting with Greek Drama, students critically examine plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes, considering their historical context, thematic depth, and the evolution of theater, from tragedy's exploration of justice, fate, and moral dilemmas to comedy's satirical critique of contemporary social issues. In a segment on Heroes and History, the course turns to the works of Homer, Herodotus, and Thucydides, examining the origins of historical thinking and the narrative structures that define epic storytelling and historical analysis. The focus is on the interplay between myth and history, the consequences of conflict, the role of human nature, and the emergence of historical consciousness. In studying Plato, students engage with the Socratic method of questioning and critique across Plato’s dialogues, from ethical inquiries to enduring discussions on love, knowledge, and the ideal state. This part of the course emphasizes critical thinking and interpretation skills through engagement with Socratic and Platonic philosophy. Finally, a first encounter with Aristotle focuses on his extensive contributions to ethics and politics. Students will attend to Aristotle’s methodology, grounded in observation and systematic analysis, and his dialogues with Plato's philosophical views.
